Title: Speak.
Author: Laurie Halse Anderson.
Category: Teen Fiction
I really don’t know where to start my review of this book. I had never even heard of it before until I saw it lying around my house and I’m sure glad I didn’t ignore it when it beckoned on me (lol). I was basically stuck in little Mel’s head all through the book. I must admit, it’s a little disturbing, but I had quite a ride.
SNEAK PEEK
Speak is about young girl who tells her story of the consequences of a holiday gone bad. This hunts her throughout her first year in high school. She becomes the outcast of the school and even her best friends become her worst enemies. This also makes her almostdumb (not medically) but she couldn’t speak to anyone, couldn’t even answer questions in class, and her lack of parental care didn’t help matters. All her relationships suffer and even her grades are not left out. The event at a party is what leads to this rather emotional story. I won’t tell you what happened; I mean we don’t want spoilers do we? So my lips are sealed on the matter (go and get your own copy!).
COMMENTARY
The book is written such a way that you actually feel everything Mel felt. We get to see through her eyes, laugh when she laughs, hate those she hates and agree with everything she agrees with. I loved the feel. I loved that I didn’t really get a chance to do judge most of the characters myself, it was refreshing. This book is one every parent must read and discuss with their teenage daughters (or maybe not…lol) but it is something every member of the family should read!
